The Generosity of Unknown Individuals: The Way a Man I Barely Knew Supported Me Secure the Role That Transformed My Existence

During the late 1980s, I set out on a budget travel adventure to the European continent with a travel partner. Since my travel mate was interested in pursuing a master’s degree in the Big Apple, we had planned a 14-day stopover there before heading to London.

We got to the graduate housing, a big 10-storey building on the Upper West Side named International House. Setting down our luggage, we went directly to the dining hall, where we picked up meals, took a seat, and engaged in conversation with other diners.

Sitting next to me was an individual of Iraqi origin pursuing an engineering degree at an Ivy League institution. He asked me what I my profession was, and I shared that I had newly finished with a science degree and had been working on studies using an electron microscope.

He mentioned that there was an electron microscope unit at the institution – adjacent to the school of engineering, which was how he knew about it. He proposed that I should apply for a role with them. I chuckled at the suggestion, saying that I was about to fly to Europe and, additionally, I lacked a US visa.

The following day I ventured out, coming back to the dining hall that after dark. The Iraqi student came up to me and let me know that he had arranged an interview for me with the head of the electron microscope unit at Columbia. Because he had gone to the trouble, I attended the interview – but right away told my interviewer that I was without a work permit, so I was likely not a suitable candidate.

As is common in NYC – a city where everything seems achievable – she responded: “That can be arranged. When can you start?” I missed my plane to London.

I held that position for a trio of years. An advantage of the role was that I also received free tuition at Columbia, and I took advantage to earn a graduate degree in global studies.

We didn't cross paths after that and I am unaware of his name, but his incredible act of kindness altered my destiny in numerous aspects. I didn't possess the bravery or self-assurance to approach someone at an Ivy League university and ask for a job. And, I had long dreamed to take classes in another country, but could never have afforded it without that free tuition.

Perhaps most importantly, that job in New York led me to a position in Switzerland where I got to know my handsome spouse from France, with whom I currently share four wonderful sons and daughters. This was a pivotal life event. That benevolent individual changed my trajectory in life, and I’m eternally thankful.
