At least thirteen people killed and ninety-eight injured in rail accident in Mexico.

A fatal railway accident in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive censure from critics regarding the rapidity and management of the country's flagship government projects.

The disaster took place on the Interoceanic Train, a route developed to link the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was created to establish an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, intended to promote commercial progress in the area.

“We are going to meticulously determine the cause of this incident,” stated the country's president.

The leader announced that, of the approximately 250 passengers on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in critical condition. The official stated plans to travel to Oaxaca to meet those affected.

Key Undertaking of Past Leadership

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone development scheme of the immediate past president, whose term finished the prior year. This venture was a hallmark of his government's strategic vision for the southern region.

Another multi-billion dollar railway undertaking from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the comprehensive effort to kickstart the economic fortunes of a comparatively less developed part of the country.

Building Management and Risks Apprehensions

The construction of both rail lines was overseen by the army, marking a dramatic increase of its duties in civilian infrastructure. They were completed at an fast-tracked rate, defying expectations to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that government.

However, this accelerated timeline had concurrently sparked significant apprehensions over construction quality.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This encompasses an earlier collision this month when a train smashed into a truck at a railroad crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen several non-deadly derailments.

Calls for Investigation and Halt

In the aftermath of the disaster, the head of a major opposition party urged an immediate pause in the development and management of all such projects.

This pause was suggested pending a thorough safety audit. The party declared that the situation "calls for prompt explanations."

In reply, the national leader insisted that the train had been running in full accordance with all safety requirements. Commitments were given that the government would continue to be "accountable" in both the development and running of these national undertakings.
